The BBC Proms is the largest and most democratic musical festival in the world. This year’s biggest Prom was the David Bowie Prom, and I was honoured to be a part of it. It was a celebration and reinterpretation of the music of David Bowie with the Berlin-based, genre-defying musicians’ collective Stargaze and its Artistic Director André de Ridder.
A trombone part was written just a few days before the Prom (hence I was booked), and then as I joined Stargaze for rehearsals, more trombone parts were added for me as we went! On the night we were joined by guest singers and collaborators – including Laura Mvula, Jherek Bischoff, Marc Almond, Paul Buchanan, John Cale, Anna Calvi, Neil Hannon, Conor O’Brien, Amanda Palmer and Philippe Jaroussky to re-imagine the Bowie catalogue with fresh settings of classic works.
